Fall is upon us, and the heating bills are going to be something to reckon with. I plan on cranking down the heat a couple degrees and adding a sweater (or two).
The elections are also upon us, not far off on November 1st. There are three ballot issues and some lively races in each Ward. Ward IV began with four candidates, but one has dropped out leaving Maryann Gillespie, Mary Ellen Kettlekamp and Jill Parsons. The Mayoral race also has three candidates, with Kathie Novak running for her second term against Gene Weineke and John Thomas. Call me if you have any questions about the ballot issues or are interested in discussing the candidates. Additionally, the Sentinel hosted a candidate forum on October 3rd which now is televised on Channel 8 in place of the Eye on Northglenn show. It is worth watching if you want to see the candidates interact and answer pertinent questions that affect Northglenn. Also, if you know of anyone needing a ride to the voting center on Election Day, I’m available all day to pick up and take home. Call me anytime during the day or the night before. Remember, our closest voting center for Ward IV is Shepard’s Hall on Kennedy. Deadlines for early and absentee voting are listed in the last Northglenn Connection.
I heard today that the geotechnical analysis regarding the condition of the soils under Huron adjacent to Croke reservoir are not a major problem so work on that area can commence without worrying about seepage. I am told that the Huron street overlay at least from Kennedy to 104th along with replacement of the trail on the north side of 104th between Huron and the west city line will start taking bids after the first of the year with work beginning before spring. There is a possibility that money will be available for replacing the trail from 104th north to the ditch, adjacent to the reservoir. This will take some shoreline repair if it is to be constructed as wide as it needs to be. I will try to keep you posted on these areas as they are frequently mentioned by citizens.
You may or may not have seen in the Saturday Rocky Mountain News that the Marketplace is being sold. This is not an unusual occurrence with shopping areas. They change hands as developers move on to other projects. Our tax increment agreement will be unaffected, and will pass on to the buyers carrying with it the same timeframes. We will receive 100% of the sales tax for the center beginning in 2009. Until that time, the taxes are shared with Jordan Perlmutter, who will pass that agreement on to the buyer. Our economic development staff is fully engaged in making sure that this major tax generator for Northglenn remains viable and fully occupied. We are actively pursuing a replacement business for the Mervyns building, which is not owned by Jordan Perlmutter. Again, our economic development staff is hard at it. Mervyns won’t be leaving until after the first of the year.
We had a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Tuesday of this week for the Century Theaters on Grant St. We had also planned a treat for our citizens by showing an outdoor movie drive-in style that evening on the property. However, the weather just didn’t cooperate so we postponed this until we can be assured a few days of better weather. I will send out a “bulletin” as soon as I know the reschedule date. This is a great opportunity to bring the family out for a fun evening.
