Hello Everyone: its Thanksgiving eve and I’m taking a break from the preparations to send my wishes to everyone for a happy and fulfilling holiday. I am thankful for so many things, but mostly the treasure of good health, close family and long-time friendships. We in Northglenn are fortunate to have a city that probably will never be threatened by natural disasters such as we experienced this year in our own New Orleans and catastrophic events in other parts of the world. There’s so much to be thankful for.
First of all, I want to congratulate Jill Parsons on her election to share with me the representation of Ward IV. The slate of candidates was excellent, and everyone really got out and talked with the voters. I would guess that Jill will want to assist me in the writing of these newsletters, so let’s look forward to her perspective once she settles into her new role.
We finalized the city budget at the last city council meeting in November, and I will share highlights of that with you in the next newsletter.
Northwest Open space redevelopment project had its second community input meeting last week, with a huge crowd attending. It warms my heart to see so many interested citizens, who clearly want to be involved in the plans and changes to that area. This second meeting reflected the changes that citizens were firm about from the September meeting, so the plan that was presented was getting more and more like what everyone wants. We have the money from Adams County Open Space funds for construction of a pavilion which will contain real bathrooms and concession stand. There is also enough money for basketball courts and children’s playground. That’s pretty much all we can do until there is additional grant money generated. The entire complex will probably be at least a 5-7 year project, so certainly nothing will occur quickly and each phase will proceed with the citizens OK. Look for a synopsis of the meeting and a draft plan for the area coming soon on the city’s website.
As an aside, I will be introducing a resolution to council after the first of the year to finally set formal boundaries for the Oscar Arnold Nature area. Believe it or not, this area that citizens strongly want to protect has never been formally determined. Well, I’m going to fix that. I will see if the map of the area can be put on the website so that you can see exactly how much of the land will be deemed the Nature Area. As always, I’m interested in your comments.
As you may have heard, we “fired” Opus/Goldberg, the developer we chose nearly a year ago to work with us on the retail development at 120th and I-25. The reason was clearly a lack of agreement on the vision we have for this special area, and an agonizingly slow progress. We became pretty frustrated with the lack of forward movement, and we felt that this was indicative of what we’d continue to experience if we didn’t make this change. So, our council meeting on December 1st will include NURA and the newly elected council members so that we can jointly make a decision about where we go from here. I strongly believe that this was the right move, and that our next steps will speed up the project. The theater project is unaffected by letting Opus go, but I want to emphasize that we want to keep the two areas in a similar timeline.
Special thanks to Jerry Hoppe, a Ward IV resident who I ran into at Windburn Park cutting up scrap tree limbs that had fallen along the trail. He was busy with his chain saw and told me he had missed “Make a Difference Day”, but wanted to do his part. Thanks Jerry for your commitment to keeping Northglenn beautiful. Jerry is the Parks Partner for Winburn, so he gets a gold star for extra effort.
Once again, please print this newsletter for your neighbors that don’t have computers. I appreciate your help. In the next newsletter, I’ll be sharing with you my priorities for Ward IV in 2006. If you are so inclined, I’d love to receive emails from you with your thoughts on this topic. It will help me immensely as we prioritize and move through the next year. Have a delightful Thanksgiving, and drive safely if you’re traveling.

At your service,

Rosie Garner
