It’s been awhile, so I’ll try to keep this informative and as short as possible. I hope you’re all well, and had a great transition into the New Year. There’s so much going on in our city, I’ll try to get you up to speed.
I’m sure you’ve all read about the sale of Albertsons, which of course affects our two stores on 104th and 120th. The entire chain was purchased by Super Valu, and from what the article said, Safeway and King Soopers will probably cherry pick the best locations, leaving the remainder as Super Valu’s discount no frills stores. More on all that as I hear anything new.
The outlook for the Mervyn’s store is good. The final sales of their inventories were done (I was there when it was 90% . . . pretty darn good !) and the names are off the store. Again, more on that as the city negotiates for a purchaser. This building is separately owned and has always been, way back to the old mall days. Thus when the Marketplace was sold, Mervyn’s was not included. By the way, the Marketplace sold for nearly double the original price. Good news for our NURA, (Northglenn Urban Renewal Authority) who will reap the benefits of the higher appraisal value.
If you’re wondering what the heck is going on at the water tanks adjacent to the new bridge, it’s the City of Thornton doing maintenance and repair on their tank. That area is such a prime spot for viewing. It has a lot of future potential and we own the land.
As you know, we have a brand new composition of councilmembers with the swearing in taking place January 12th. Jill Parsons will join me in representing the wonderful citizens in Ward IV for the next 2 years until I will need to run again. Council seats are staggered so that there is always one experienced person. She’s busy getting oriented to her position and getting up to speed on the current issues. She’ll be speaking to you through this newsletter in the very near future.
On that note, I have spent some time with our computer staff reworking this newsletter and the potential it has for more capability. Watch for a new look very soon !!! Encourage your friends to subscribe, not only to this newsletter but also those done by Councilmembers Paiz, Lindsey and Monroe in Wards I and II. Subscribing is really easy on the city’s website, Northglenn.org, click on email newsletters.
I’m happy to report that the funding to replace the trail on 104th from Huron to the city line has been given to us by Adams County. Construction should begin this spring. What great news.
My new appointments for the next two years are really going to benefit not only the city, but the residents directly. I’m continuing with DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments) as the Mayors alternate, and also will stay with DRCOG’s Council on Aging. I also am the representative from Northglenn for Adams County A-Lift transportation for seniors and disabled. I will serve on the Senior Commission this year, which I’m really looking forward to, and also will be the city’s liaison to North Metro Fire Board and the Rangeview Library Board. With all that, please let me know your concerns as they pertain to any one of these areas. All ideas of any type regarding any issue are always welcome too.
Jill’s appointments include Northglenn's representative to the I-25 Corridor planning group, and the Historic Commission.
Congratulations to Chris DeMay, a resident of Ward IV on his appointment to the Adams County Open Space Committee. This is a great use of Chris’s skills, and I’m confident he will represent the use of open space in Adams County very well.
I promised you that I would outline my priorities for Ward IV for the year 2006. These are of course, in addition to the Council’s goals and objectives for the entire city. Here they are, not necessarily in order:
***Northwest Open Space continuation of public process and decision on the first phase of redevelopment.
***Croke Reservoir public process to determine purpose, design and Huron shoreline improvements.
***Completion of trail construction on 104th between Huron and the city limits
***Improve the capabilities of this newsletter and increase the subscribing households.
***Develop and implement a citizen advisory group to guide me in decisions I make.
Please call or email me if this isn’t your idea of where I should be putting my energy. You know I always appreciate your ideas and comments.
Again as always, please print this newsletter for your neighbors who don’t have computer access, or forward to them if they don’t already subscribe.
At your service,
Rosie Garner
